Belt Ranks and the Path to Black Belt

Most people know White Belt and Black Belt. The magic happens in the years of goals, tests and triumphs in between.

Why the belt system matters

One ingredient in building confidence is built right into martial arts: a series of goals, experiences and triumphs that happen for years between the "beginner" and "expert" levels that White and Black Belt represent. By striving for and achieving goal after goal as they move through the belt levels, students form a habit of self-belief. There will always be struggles, but through perseverance and positive encouragement students adopt a "can do" attitude, and it becomes clear, even to children, that if they apply themselves and seek help when needed, they are capable of so much.

How progression works at World Class Tae Kwon Do

  • Stripes. Between belts, students earn stripes on their belt for mastering specific skills. Our Little Tigers follow a specially designed striped-belt curriculum on a regular schedule so even five year olds learn to set and reach goals.
  • Colored belts. Each colored belt introduces new forms (poomsae), kicks, self-defense techniques and, as students mature, sparring. Skills are taught in pieces and layered from basic to advanced, which is what makes the system so beginner-friendly.
  • Belt testing. When a student is ready, they test in front of the instructors. Testing is a big deal on purpose: performing under pressure, in front of a group, is one of the most valuable experiences we can give a young person. Breaking a board, participating in a sparring match, testing for the next rank: all of those start out unfamiliar and end up as proof of what a student can do.
  • Black Belt. A Black Belt at World Class Tae Kwon Do represents years of consistent effort and is earned, never given. We have seen thousands of students of all backgrounds and abilities achieve it.

How long does it take?

It depends on the student, their age and how consistently they train. Most students attend two classes per week and progress at a steady, individual pace. We would rather a student truly own a rank than rush through it, so instructors decide readiness based on skill and attitude, not a calendar. Ask us at your trial class and we will give you an honest picture for your situation.

Our lineage

Our school is part of the World Class Tae Kwon Do Association founded by Grandmaster Sun Ki Chong, former U.S. National Team Head Coach, one of the top martial arts organizations in the country. Owners Master TJ Eskew and Master Dennis Polanski studied directly under Grandmaster Chong, so the curriculum your child follows here is the same proven path that has produced generations of black belts.
