How to Choose a Martial Arts School in Naperville: 7 Questions

Comparing martial arts schools in Naperville or Aurora? Seven questions that separate a great kids' program from a mediocre one.

A full Tae Kwon Do class training at World Class Tae Kwon Do near Naperville

Search "martial arts Naperville" and you will find dozens of options: Tae Kwon Do, karate, jiu-jitsu, MMA gyms, franchise programs and independent schools. They are not all the same, and the style matters less than most parents think. Here are the seven questions we would ask if we were choosing a school for our own kids.

1. Who is actually teaching the class?

Ask who will be on the mat with your child, not just whose name is on the sign. At many schools the owner sells memberships while junior instructors run classes. At World Class Tae Kwon Do the owners, Master TJ Eskew and Master Dennis Polanski, teach, and both trained directly under Grandmaster Sun Ki Chong, former U.S. National Team Head Coach. Ask any school about their instructors' lineage and years of teaching experience.

2. How many instructors are on the floor?

One instructor and twenty seven-year-olds is supervision, not coaching. Ask how many instructors work a typical kids' class and how they handle a child who needs extra help or is having a hard day.

3. Is there a curriculum for character, or just for kicks?

Most parents enroll for focus, confidence, respect and self-control, not for a spinning hook kick. Ask how the school teaches those things. If the answer is vague ("it just happens through martial arts"), be skeptical. Our curriculum is built around those life skills explicitly, and each belt has character goals alongside physical ones.

4. Are classes grouped by age?

A five year old and an eleven year old need different classes. Look for a dedicated program for the youngest students (ours is Little Tigers, ages 5–6, 30 minutes) and a clear step up for older kids and teens.

5. Can you try before you commit?

Any confident school will let you take a free class with no obligation. Be wary of high-pressure enrollment on the first visit. Ask about the trial, and ask what the commitment looks like after it.

6. Does the schedule actually work for your family?

Check for after-school times, evening options and Saturday classes, and check how far the school is from your home and your child's school. A great program you cannot get to twice a week is not a great program for you. Our schedule has four sessions per week for each age group, and we sit on Route 59 at the Naperville–Aurora border.

7. What do other parents say?

Read Google and Facebook reviews and look for specifics: named instructors, changes parents saw at home, families that stayed for years. Then visit. Websites and phone calls help, but your decision should be shaped by walking in, watching a class and seeing how instructors treat the kids.
